If You Can't Make It Good...
What the hell is wrong with us? I mean the "civilized" world? Why is bigger, better? What's with all the conspicuous consumption?

When I was at Art School, there was a "joke", a misplaced philosophy regarding artwork.

IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT GOOD, MAKE IT BIG.
IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT BIG, MAKE IT RED.

Would you trade you great-grandmother's cameo for big diamond ring?

Would you rather have a 20oz Hershey bar or 1oz of fine Belgian chocolate?(OK, 2oz of fine Belgian chocolate.)

Speaking of small good things, the country of Belgium will celebrate it's Independence Day July 21. I had no idea how many different beers the Belgians brew. Check this out... http://www.visitbelgium.com/ click on Introduction to Belgium, then the red word "beers" in the 2nd paragraph.

25 varieties should arrive tomorrow. I think the quality will overcome the lack of quantity.

Vive la Belgium(is that correct?)

Hej, Chinq:

I agree with you on the conspicuous consumption stuff. I work for bosses who own 11 expensive cars between the two of them (they're married to each other), yet don't pay me enough of a salary (after 11.5 years) to enable me to work only one job (I work three, and this is just for necessities - mortgage, car, heat, telephone, electricity, food). The Local Town Hall has gone bananas, and in their quest for conspicuous consumption, they have more than doubled the real estate taxes in my little (what used to be "working class") neighborhood so that all the "natives" (my family's been here since 1939) are being forced to sell out so it can become a bedroom community or a summer community for the rich 'n famous in neighboring states. What my father paid in 1939 for four times the size of my house lot now doesn't even pay one months' worth of real estate taxes - hence the "I'm movin' on, and I'm movin' out." I, too, wonder when it will all end.

However, rather than to keep ranting about the stupidity and the unfairness of it all, I think I'm going to go find me a couple of ounces of Belgian chocolate. And if I did have a cameo from my greatgrandmother, I'd be trying to sell it to pay my real estate taxes. Thank you for hitting the nail on the head, and for letting me vent. Whatever happened to "Simplicity?"
I.

Lady C

Are you having any Belgian draft horses draw your booty into the Nut House? If so, I hope they also pack a lot of Belgian chocolat with the order. I have a very sweet tooth for that particular confection.

BTW can any of you ladies cook up a batch of 25 or 30 Belgian waffles? I like mine topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and a large scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle. I do like to indulge every once and a while, and this seem like the perfect occaision.

SKR,

Not to be rude, but that's why The Nut House has an internationally renown chef. You didn't think that Bouillabaisse made itself?

Tomorrow we'll have a "Belgian Treat" Happy Hour, chocolates & waffles(even though "Belgian" waffles are from Luxembourg).

miz chinq:

pardon me for replyin' to an older post; between bartending for miz b. and managing dr. cat's office and crittersitting, i'm slap out of personal time. i've been meaning to stop by and enjoy a drink with you...it's so nice to be on the receivin' end of the bar sometimes.....

tonite i was able to finally sit down and make my way through l'histoire de la maison des noiseaux. i've put you on my fave's list, right along with all the other lovely folks i've met in blog land.

fyi....(i lived in waterloo for trois ans)

vive la belgique!

pommes de terre a la belgique = frites

belgian waffles = les gauffres (think gopher with a french accent)

and my all time favorite belgian specialty: les moules (mussels)...best place to find them: a ratty lil restaurant off the grande place, which used butcher paper for tableclothes. *drools daintily* they were served in a bowl 3" deep, and you chose your sauce. no silverware, you ate your mussels using a mussel as a pincer. *drools s'more*.

do come on by miz b's in your copious free time....i'd love to fix you an up-against-the-wall-redneck-mother, on me! (trust me, that bein' on the other side of the bar is a marvy thing). *and* we'll have chad the cabana boy take real good care of you.

*curtsies* pleasure to make your acquaintance, miz chinq.
